It all began in the spring of 1953, when a small subdivision along the Fox River called Riverside Park got together, built their own station, and formed the Riverside Park Fire Department.  The department served the rural areas between the towns of Crystal Lake, Island Lake, Cary and McHenry.

In 1955, a fire district was formed and the name of the department was changed to the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District.  As the area grew so did the department, and in 1963, broke ground for a new fire station on State Route 176.  With the growing needs of the area, in 1985 an addition was added to the building.  In 1994 came the purchase of some vacant land on Ames Road in Prairie Grove for a future second station.

Today The Nunda Fire Department is located on State Route 176 near Burtons Bridge in unincorporated Crystal Lake, IL.  We provide Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services for parts of the Village of Prairie Grove and unincorporated areas of Crystal Lake and McHenry.

We are a fully part time department operating with Paid on Premise (POP) and Paid on Call (POC) personnel.  Currently our station is staffed with 2 FireFighter/Paramedics or a minimum of 1 FireFighter/Paramedic and 1 FireFighter/EMT-B, 24 hours a day.
