Rejects and B-Sides

Rejects and B-Sides is a CD that my friend Aubrey and I recorded back in 2001.  It’s not produced very well, we recorded it at home, but many of the songs we wrote are actually pretty good.  Try listening to a few songs here.

The Songs:

1)        The Key   (3:49)

(Gene Rhea Tucker, Aubrey Edwards)

Hey baby take the time

To break the mold inside your mind

And see

If it’s enough to set you free

And if you take me slow

There’s a million places that we can go

And see

And make our own memories

And if you’ve got the nerve

I’ll give you all that you deserve

I have the key

That opens the door to mystery

So baby hold me close

I’ll prove that you mean the most

To me

Baby all you got to do is believe

Oh yeah this feels so right

The stars are jealous of us tonight

I have the key

That opens the door to mystery

So baby take the time

To break the mold inside your mind

And see

If it’s enough to set you free

Baby don’t you know I have the key

That opens the door to mystery

2)        Drinkin’ O. E. (From a Frosty Mug)   (5:07)

(Aubrey Edwards, Gene Rhea Tucker)

[You can take the thug out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the thug.]

Sittin’ down here in Stephenville

I don’t know what to do

I’m thinkin’ about women

And quite possibly Denny too, yeah

I gotta go to Proctor

Gotta get me somethin’ to drink

I don’t like driving down that road

That son of a bitch is too long and straight, oh yeah!

Drinkin’ O. E. from a frosty mug

Feeling like a first rate Houston thug

Ain’t nobody here, but me and Red

And that shit’s goin’ right straight to my head

I wanna go out tonight

Might even head to the bar

But beer is so expensive there

Five dollars won’t get you too far

So I’ll sit here with my forty

Sit right here and think

The answer is in the bottle

All you got to do is drink, oh yeah!

Drinkin’ O. E. from a frosty mug

Feeling like a first rate Houston thug

Ain’t nobody here, but me and Red

And that shit’s goin’ right straight to my head

Later on when the sun goes down

And that party starts a getting good

We’ll break out all the bottles

And start feeling just like we should

I’ll find me a sexy nympho

That I can call my own

Cuz there’s nothing like some malt liquor

To put her in the zone, oh yeah!

Drinkin’ O. E. from a frosty mug

Feeling like a first rate Houston thug

Ain’t nobody here, but me and Red

And that shit’s goin’ right straight to my head

3)        (Down to)  Seeds  and Stems (Again)   (3:27)

(Billy Farlow, George Frayne)

[A sad little number from Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, classic country.]

I’m sittin’ alone, on Saturday night, watching the late late show

A bottle of wine, some cigarettes, ain’t got no place to go

Well I saw your other man today, he was wearin’ my brand new shoes

And I’m down to seeds and stems again, too

Well I saw my old friend Paul today, from down in Greune

He had the prettiest little gal, that I’ve ever seen

But I couldn’t hide my tears at all, cuz she looked just like you

And I’m down to seeds and stems again, too

Now everybody tells me

There’s other ways to get high

They don’t seem to understand

That I’m too far gone to try

Now these lonely memories

They’re are all I can’t lose

I’m down to seeds and stems again, too

Well my dog died just yesterday, he went and left me all alone

The finance company dropped by today, and repossessed my home

But that’s just a drop in the bucket, compared to losing you

And I’m down to seeds and stems again, too

I got the down to seeds and stems again blues

4)        Devil in Disguise   (4:03)

(Aubrey Edwards, Gene Rhea Tucker)

[Aubrey wrote the words in five minutes, I wrote the music.]

Well its been a long time

I’m glad to see that you still care

I’ve got a lot of things to do

But I’m not going anywhere

Once you told me how sweet you were

You told me you were mine

You said you were an angel

But you were evil all the time

If I had one more chance

I still don’t know what I’d do

To me you were the best curve

That the devil ever threw

So don’t come in here telling those lies

You’re the only thing I have to despise

You might be an angel on the outside

But you’re a devil in disguise

A devil in disguise

You said it’d last forever

And even I couldn’t disagree

I was blind to all your demons

You stole the life right out of me

And the only light that shines in the darkness of the bottle

Is the love we had

And I wouldn’t throw away the good times

To lose my grip on the bad

If I had one more chance

I still don’t know what I’d do

To me you were the best curve

That the devil ever threw

So don’t come in here telling those lies

You’re the only thing I have to despise

You might be an angel on the outside

But you’re a devil in disguise

A devil in disguise

If I had one more chance

I still don’t know what I’d do

To me you were the best curve

That the devil ever threw

So don’t come in here telling those lies

You’re the only thing I have to despise

You might be an angel on the outside

But you’re a devil in disguise

A devil in disguise

5)        My Rifle, My Pony, and Me   (2:08)

(Dmitri Tiomkin, Paul Francis Webster)

[Originally sung by Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson in the John Wayne classic Rio Bravo. Okay, we’re not that good, but oh well.]

The sun is sinking in the west

The cattle go down to the stream

The redwing settles in her nest

Its time for a cowboy to dream

Purple light in the canyon

That’s where I long to be

With my three good companions

Just my rifle, pony, and me

Gonna hang my sombrero

On the limb of a tree

Comin’ home sweetheart darlin

Just my rifle, pony, and me

Whippoorwill in the willow

Sings a sweet melody

Ridin’ to Amarillo

Just my rifle, pony, and me

No more cows to be ropin

No more strays will I see

Around the bend she’ll be waiting

For my rifle, pony, and me

For my rifle, my pony, and me

6)        Alright   (3:40)

(Gene Rhea Tucker)

[I hate this song, but we needed one more.]

I don’t know but I’ve been told

That women will steal your soul

I don’t know but I heard its true

That they will go and leave you blue

Hey now it’s alright

Hey now it’s alright

Cuz I know you’ll be with me tonight

And everything will be alright

Hush baby now don’t you cry

Wipe the tear from your gentle eye

I know it’s hard when you’re all alone

Don’t worry I’ll soon be home

Hey now it’s alright

Hey now it’s alright

Cuz I know you’ll be with me tonight

And everything will be alright

And we can share all we have

And we can share the dreams we’ve planned

Like love again at first sight

Everything will be alright

Hey now it’s alright

Hey now it’s alright

Cuz I know you’ll be with me tonight

And everything will be alright

7)        Number Seven (Only Could)   (3:40)

(Gene Rhea Tucker, Aubrey Edwards)

[Perhaps our best song. Some people actually like it.]

Out on the town

With some good friends I know

Why’d you have to come and

Steal the show

With that red dress on

Lookin’ so tight

Don’t you know you make me cry

Each and every night

You left me alone

You hurt me good and,

I’d be over you,

If I only could

Down at the river,

Fishin’ to pass the time,

Tellin’ stories

And drinkin’ sangria wine

But someone’s lip gets loose

And I hear your name

It breaks me up inside and

That’s a crying shame

You left me alone

You hurt me good and,

I’d be over you,

If I only could

I wake up in the mornin’ and I,

Reach across the bed

But you’re not really there

You’re just in my head

So I drink some whiskey

To ease my soul

I tell you life is good man

I’m on a roll

You left me alone

You hurt me good and,

I’d be over you,

If I only could

You left me alone

You hurt me good and,

I’d be over you,

If I only could

You left me alone

You hurt me good and,

I’d be over you,

If I only could

You left me alone

You hurt me good and,

I’d be over you,

If I only could
