This story was directly Inspired by reading a dozen Georgette Heyer books one hot summer in rural Victoria. The manuscript  took three years to research and write under the working title of The Folk Devils, and on the surface it's a departure from my previous, very contemporary settings. But time is like a spiral, and things do not change much. The Melbourne of 2004 has very similar traits, and its people are still confronting the same things - upward mobility, migration, nationalism, social status, being defined by origin, religion, racism and the manipulative power of the media. Oh yes, and those other constants - sex and drugs.
