| C.R.A.N.N.E. came together in the fall of 1998 when Hobie Fleet 209 was more or less abandoned. At that point, the New Hampshire State Catamaran Championship regatta held every year at Ellacoya State Park on Lake Winnipesaukee was in jeopardy of not happening again. Prindle Fleet 80 which was a mixed catamaran fleet from all over northern New England stepped in to ensure that this did not happen. A merger took place for this truely mixed fleet of beach catamarans and a new fleet name was established to represent this sailing organization. Since we are all enjoy sailing for the most part more than anything, we have several events that the fleet hosts each sailing season. These events are for both the recreational sailor as well as the competitive sailor. We start each season with a "Learn to Sail" event held the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend at Ellacoya State Park in Gilford NH. This event is co-hosted with of NH sister fleet, Hobie Fleet 496. Throughout the summer months we hold three events at Sebago Lake State park in Casco ME. Two of these involve open class portsmouth racing for both beginner to intermediate and more advanced racers. The other which is held around the 4th of July is purely a fun event. These Sebago events are great family orintated events that include tent camping as well as some wonderful fresh water sailing. Each night we kick back by the campfire and tell tales of great sailing while roasting marshmallows for samores. C.R.A.N.N.E. volunters staff two Division 12 regattas. One of these events is the Pine Point-Old Orchard Beach regatta held on Pine Point Beach in Scarborough ME during August and the other is the New Hampshire State Catamaran Championships regatta held at Ellacoya State Park in Gilford NH during September. These two regattas feature one design racing for Hobie Classes as well as other classes with five or more boats. The remaining boats race open class using the Portsmouth rating system which is a handicap system maintained by the US Sailing organinization. In August we also have our "Homeport" regatta which is hosted at the home of one of our fleet members at Great Pond in Belgrade Lakes ME. Here we do some racing during the day then come back in and have a summer New England lobster feast. Due to the space and financial reasons, we reseverve this regatta to fleet members only. We end our sailing season with a leisurely cruise in Portland harbor stopping for lunch on one of the islands. Our events are planned around the Division 12 regatta schedule. Anyone interested in beach catamaran sailing in New England should be able to find an event going on most every weekend from May to October. |
