In 1986 the worst nuclear accident ever occurred when the nuclear plant at Chernobyl, in the then Soviet Union, released radioactive material into the atmosphere. The fallout spread over large parts of the Ukraine, Balarius and Russia. Farmers as far away as Sweden were warned of radioactive contamination when the prevailing winds shifted towards the Nordic countries. Read more about Chernobyl here.

Radioactive cranberries grown in the Ukraine and Balarius have turned up thirteen years later in Moscow markets. Almost fifteen hundred pounds of cranberries have had to be confiscated and destroyed.
