ALL ABOUT ALBERTINE

Cramberry Albertine

Thinking about those squirrel cousins who were attacking Frank's Hibiscus tree

brought back memories of Albertine.

A long time ago a tall pine tree stood near Sue's garden. This tree was home to

many squirrels. Somehow, my squirrel cousins were able to get peanuts.

Looking for a safe place to hide these peanuts, they dug up Sue's flower beds

and buried them there. Later on they were looking for the peanuts and

destroyed Sue's flower beds.

Sue was very sad to see this. After a lot of thinking she had an idea: she

figured out that her flower beds would be safe, as long as a person was

sitting nearby. Sue therefore used cardboard to construct a lady called

Albertine. Sue dressed her in a bright green top, beige pants, and a

beautiful green winter cap with flowers. She also gave Albertine some fine

sunglasses and hung a metal pocket mirror around her neck.

Albertine was installed in a nice lawn chair. The squirrel cousins watched

Albertine carefully, and noticed that she did not move; so they concluded

that there was no danger; it was safe to carry on as before.

In fact, those squirrel cousins became downright bold. After they had dug up

their peanuts in the flower containers, they sat in Albertine's lap, getting

her all dirty with the peanut shells.

The worst thing that Sue observed had to do with that metal pocket mirror

around Albertine's neck: one particular squirrel cousin apparently did not

like to see his reflection. He seized the metal pocket mirror and threw it

over Albertine's shoulder, so that it was now hanging down her back.

That was the end of Albertine's career as a garden protector!
