After reading Margaret Cho's autobiography,
I'm the One That I Want, I knew that sex was a large part of her life. Unfortunately, I did not expect that it would in turn comprise a large part of her comedy routine in this movie,
The Notorious C.H.O.
I don't have anything against it, per se, it's simply that it grew tiring over an hour and a half to hear all the ways that she has experimented with sex. From going to an S&M club to being "fisted," Cho covers it all. After the first half hour, I lost interest and it just stopped being funny.
I don't watch many stand-up films (the last one was Eddie Izzard, below), so when I do, I want them to be really hilarious. So, generally I'm pretty picky. I guess I just lost out this time. But I'll probably look out for Margaret's next film, just in case, because she is one of the funniest comics working today.
Eddie Izzard is an English transvestite who fancies women. I mention this first to give you an idea of his personality, but also because it's one of the first things he mentions, given that he comes out on stage and performs in high heels and makeup.
He's also one of the funniest stand-up comics working today, if
Dress to Kill is anything to go by. At an hour and a half, he's also one of the most prolific (generally, stand-up shows barely last an hour).
Comedy is a difficult thing to review: one can only say whether one laughed. I laughed. A little at first, but as things went on, more and more. And somewhere between "Cake or Death?" and "Five Gold Rings!" I just lost it completely and was a guffawing mess with stomach pains the rest of the night.
The Dress to Kill DVD also contains a funny film clip of tourists going to Alcatraz. Izzard's narration is what makes it funny, however, as he imagines that they are going for an entirely different reason. It is a good introduction to the humorous style of Izzard and prepares you for what is yet to come.
