Suggestions on How to Practice

For Beginning Band Members

Practice Properly on the assigned lessons. Don't try to see how loud or high you can play.

1. Think count numbers in your head and tap foot on all exercises.

2. Breathing exercises

a. Breathe deep

b. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold it for 4 counts, then breathe out for 4 counts.

3. Embouchure and Mirror

a. Firm corners, chin down

b. Check in mirror

4. Mouthpiece and Mirror

a. Check embouchure in mirror

b. Play long, steady tones

c. Work for clear pleasing tones

5. See how long you can hold same note

6. Practice the above items fifteen minutes daily

Other Important items

1. Posture - Sit tall, practice standing at times

2. Position - Check proper finger, hand, and arm positions

3. Assembly - Put instrument together with care

4. Practice assigned lessons

5. Go slowly

6. Work daily for better tone, embouchure, counting, breathing, and tonguing
