HOW TO PRACTICE for 2nd and 3rd year players

  1. Practice daily for progress and results
  2. Assemble your instrument carefully and lubricate regularly or when needed.
  3. Warm up the instrument.
  4. Condition your embouchure by playing long tones and for brass, lip slurs
  5. Limber your fingers by playing scales and exercises – go slowly at first, increasing the speed only if the patterns can be played evenly.
  6. Practice the assigned lesson or music parts. When unable to play a particular phrase or group of notes, stop. Make an exercise out of the difficult part. Practice it slowly at first, then gradually build up to proper speed.
  7. Practice for results – not just for some specific length of time. It’s more fun to play if you can play well, and practice is the only thing that will make this possible.
  8. After a practice session is over, dry the inside of woodwinds and drain moisture from brass instruments. Then wipe off the outside of the instrument. Carefully return the instrument to its case. Avoid damage: do not keep stands, mutes, music or other objects in the case unless the case is designed for storing them.

ALSO:

  1. Practice for a good tone. (Good tone is most important aspect of playing!)
  2. Practice with expression. (You are not making music unless you use dynamics, style and phrasing!)
  3. Practice at a regular time each day.
  4. Use only the front one-fourth of the chair when sitting, and use good posture.
  5. Practice while standing sometimes. (This promotes proper breath control)
  6. Practice difficult measures over slowly at least twenty times. , then increase speed.
