** Advanced topics in harmony

** Rhythm and meter theory

** Upper level analysis

** Transposing and arranging

** Preparation for the AP Exam

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1. All homework, class work, and tests must be completed in pencil, erasable ink, or have errors corrected with white-out in order to receive credit. If you wish to complete your assignments using a music - writing software, you must format the work exactly as required for work done by hand. Sloppy work will be counted as incorrect.

2. You must provide your own manuscript paper for class work and homework. No work will be accepted for credit on notebook paper with a hand-drawn staff.

3. Homework is assigned nearly nightly when we are working from the textbooks. Homework is usually graded on completeness rather than correctness, so students should prepare all the assignments even if they are not sure of some answers. When we are working on projects and test preparation in class, there will usually be a long-term independent project going on at home at the same time. Success in music theory depends on "doing" rather than "listening and memorizing". It is a knowledge AND SKILLS class.

4. All students will turn in a notebook at the end of each six weeks period that will count as one test grade. The notebook should contain class notes, homework assignment sheet, all homework, and all tests and quizzes for that six weeks. A complete notebook turned in on time will receive a grade of 100. Late or missing notebooks will count as a zero test grade.

GRADING

Each six weeks grade will consist of the following:

* Tests/Quizzes - 70%

* Homework - 20% (100 for complete, 80, 50, or 0 for incomplete to undone)

* Class Participation - 10% The class participation grade depends on your being awake, alert, and focused on the lesson each day. You will be penalized 10 points for distracting yourself with work other than theory and 20 points for sleeping in class.

Class projects and independent projects may count for one or more test grade.

ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK

Much material is covered in this class and very quickly, so it is to your benefit to come to class each day and keep up with your work. If you must miss class, get caught up immediately

or you will find yourself way behind sooner than you might expect. Even with perfect attendance, the class is small, so we cannot put ourselves on hold every time a few people are absent.

Class assignments and homework are due when they are due. If you must check out before class, I must have the work in my hand before you go. If you miss class on a day that an assignment is due and later check in, you must turn in the assignment by the end of the day. Checking out on test days is a big NO-NO.

If you are absent from school, homework and assignments must be turned in immediately upon your return. You are responsible for making up missed work upon your return. It is up to you to ask for missed assignments. The best way to do this is to have a buddy in class who can get the notes and assignment for you. Tests must be made up on your own time. Depending upon the length and nature of your absence, you and I will plan together how much time you have to make up the test. I will be happy to work with you before or after school or during a study hall.

***Conduct problems should not be an issue in an AP class. You should have neither the time nor the energy to do anything other than concentrate on your studies!!
