16th - 19th November: I spend my last day in Buenos Aires chasing down my post, changing flights and other domestic things which so often ruin a nice holiday. I will spare the details, suffice to say that customer service is not a priority, and my letters are in another city. A Jorge from another town sees my plight and spends half an hour working through argi beaurocracy, and I believe that I will see my letters in Puerto Madryn, with some luck. Like all the genuinely good people I meet, he refuses any recompense (dinner etc) for his deed. He does remind me not to define a people by those met in a big city. I give my second aerosol painting to the Limehouse Hostel to say thanks for all the great treatment, but forget to take a piccy of it first.. and spend so long saying my goodbyes that I arrive late in the bus terminal, just managing to catch the last bus southwardbound. Pausing for 5 minutes in Bahia Blanca, and seeing that there was no beach, I continued the next 800km south to Puerto Madryn, watching the vegetation become sparser while making a bracelet from my newly learnt jewellery making skills (yes, I have been busy). I head out with the backpackers to shoot pool and scoff my first plate of scallops in a good long while - Puerto Montt has aluminium refining, an active port, agriculture and tourism to sustain it, creating one of the richest towns that I have seen to date. I courageously rent a bike and ride down the coast - I had forgotten how good exercise is! I pass the local gravel rugby ground and a match is on. The tackling seems to be a touch different due to the terrain.. The ecomuseum and dunes are just what I need. The coastline is reminiscent of Yorke Peninsula, except that the sand is a startling brown. I take a tour over corrugated roads to the Peninsula Valdés and see elephant seals, ostriches and llamas.. then southern right whales on a boat trip. One baby calf was less than 2 metres from my camera lens.. so close that I forgot to take a photo. Here is where the Killer Whales beach themselves hunting for seals, and if your very lucky you can see them. We´re not. I meet up with a couple of Aussie lads from Sydney and share a typical beer and junk food night, then meet Teddy, an Israeli with whom I exchange jewellery tricks.
