SONNTAGS STORY IN LOUISIANA |
|
Bernard
John Sonntag emigrated from the port Harve, France on or about
October, 1860. He immigrated
to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, where he remained for the rest if his
life. He worked there as a cabinet maker and as a factory worker. About 1861 he married Elizabeth Hunsinger, also a native of the Alsace-Lorraine Region of France, who immigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA about 1854. Their marriage produced four children: Virginia Sonntag (b. 1862), Francois Henri Sonntag (b. 1865), Wilhelmina Elizabeth Sonntag (b. 1870), and John Bernard Sonntag (b. 1872). His
siblings: Virginia ended up getting married 3 times. Although Francois did
live most of his life in New Orleans he did end up traveling to
California. Wilhelmina married Joseph Dessauer and stayed in New Orleans.
John became a world traveler playing his Harp Guitar. It was noted that he
traveled to Texas, Arizona and even Hawaii. Elizabeth
Hunsinger died in 1894 at the age of 61-years, 6-months. In 1895 Bernard Sonntag married Mary Sutten, the widow of William Leidinger. The marriage produced three children: Joseph Augustin Sonntag (b. 1897), Amelia Sonntag (b. 1898), and Charles Eugene Sonntag (b. 1900). The family also included Louisa Leidinger, a child from Mary Sutten’s previous marriage. Unfortunately
this side of the family is no so well known. We do know that charlie ended
up living his life in New Orleans. This was confirmed by a letter written
from the Dessauer side of the family. At this point we have no
information on Joe or Amilia Sonntag. Bernard
John Sonntag died on October 23, 1916 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, at
the age of 77-years.
