![]() Long Mast Ships It must have been a long journey to the new world. Harsh weather, the ship getting tossed around. I am know most people survived in the steerage area. The cost must have seemed enormous to travel. Around 1850 the average cost for a ticket to the New World was a staggering 180 US Dollars, 800 francs or 360 Marks. All ships at that time where mast ships. Steam power had not yet arrived, so the travel time from Europe to America was about forty days. But the question remains, Who came across the Atlantic to the United States from Europe. At this point we can only guess with only two exceptions. The information provided to our family from our relatives is the only information that we have regarding how they got to New Orleans. The other mystery is if any other Sonntags made it to the new world. From what we see in New Orleans, there is that possibility.
