Coming to America |
| What would posses anyone from traveling so far to a new
world? My Great, Great Grandfather Bernard (Bernhardt) Sonntag did it
around 1860. He was between 18 and 21 years old. That is quite a trip for
such a young lad. You would think, that in order to make such a journey,
that he would had to have someone waiting on the other side of the Ocean.
Granted, the Sonntags have been risk takers. I can feel it in my blood. Maybe not that I am as old as I am now, but in my youth the sky was the limit. How was he planning to survive? Once he got off the boat where was he going to sleep, eat? Some pretty tough questions to say the least. If I were to bet, I would guess that there was someone on the other side. The question is who? Someone that had gone before Bernard. Someone most likely older. Someone to provide a place for him to stay. Think of the language barrier? From what I have been told Bernard was Bilingual, but learning English in a 40 day voyage across the sea sounds a bit more difficult than Noah and his Ark. Where would a young lad get that type of money to get a ticket just to cross? Many questions with few answers. If we could only have a time machine to go back and see how things transpired. I would be the first one on the boat! |
