[ -'Twas The Day Before The Day- ]

by C.D.Smith

Re-united: This is how it will be!

The sun managed to sneak into the room through the small gap between the drawn curtains.  She didn’t feel a day older than twenty years, lying awake in her old bed, her husband snoring on the floor – he had long fallen asleep while she continued telling him about all her friends that he would meet.  There was a buzz in the house and she knew that her brother was already awake, and helping himself in the kitchen as though he had never left home twelve years previously. "Nanfus!", there's a thing for George.

The old photographs were still lying on the pedestal from the previous night – how thankful she was, that her mother kept all the old junk from the past (can you believe, even the prize she won for volley-ball at Koinonia was still in the box!).  The group photograph after the audience was wowed by the performance that their group had rendered.  “Like a river flows, surely to the sea” the songs all came flooding back to memory.

Ah, the picture taken during the Saturday morning aerobics – what a sight!  The tennis match – who decided on sports anyway (hope they haven’t planned any of this exercise and sporty stuff, this time around.)

She picked up the photograph taken while the choir sang before the service.  “I can’t believe I actually wore that to a youth service”, she gasped, thinking about the choir conductors who each conducted an anthem.  She remembered the lesson of the day, " I know thy works: behold I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name."

And of course, the photograph with her best friend (wonder what has happened to her?)

She rushed off to the bathroom and then changed into her clothes.  Then she went to check the calendar to make sure that it was March 21st! The calendar did not lie …

Striiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike! Gonna give them stick, she shouted as she entered her parents room.  Both her parents were still asleep but she couldn’t help herself but to jump onto their bed, waking them and almost causing her father to have a heart-attack.

But this was it – this was the big day – this was the moment when the stress of being a career woman, mother and wife no longer existed – this was the moment when she felt really alive.

She knew that they would all be there – except for those dear ones who had since died.  A brief moment of sadness was soon past when she heard the soft voice of her little daughter who had just entered the room, “mummy … what day is it today?”

She couldn’t believe that this day had finally dawned – re-union day!

[the author wishes you to write the rest of the story yourself, after the Wentworth District Youth Re-Union – 2004]

May the Lord bless you and keep you, may His face shine on you and give you peace.

In the tradition of the mid 1980’s, here’s a few samples of the songs we used for our presentations:

Now you can bring Pearl

She’s a darn nice girl,

But don’t bring Lulu!

You can bring Rose

With the turned up nose,

But don’t bring Lulu

I am just a chocolate soldier man

For me you feel great pity

Just a funny chocolate soldier man

In a uniform so pretty

             - Plus:

Sweet sixteen, goes to church, just to see the boys ...

Father Abraham had many sons …

Soft as the voice of an angel, breathing a message unheard, hope for the gentle persuasion …

Plaisir D’Amour ne dure qu’un moment …

Don’t drink those beers no more, don’t let your head be sore, if you want to have life, why don’t you …

There goes my only possession …

Will there be a guitar at re-union day?  Can anybody still play all these songs?
