Abstract

"Battles are won by great execution, not by great plans! Great execution can save a mediocre plan; poor execution will always ruin a great plan" the words of General George Patton.

The past two decades has seen many business transformation imperatives promising sustainable growth into the 21st century. There has been much debate (and bad press) recently regarding the productivity, or counter-productivity of these management trends. To enable effective execution of these imperatives, there must be a sound information base from which organisations work.

Mintzberg (1998) recommends that organisations must "replace the din of hype with a more thoughtful approach rooted in experience".
How does an organisation encapsulate it's history and experience?

This paper looks at the issue of legacy systems and how it has evolved to support the key business drivers; and how to leverage the existing investment in legacy systems to encapsulate our history and experience.
