This is an old 1930's radio my Dad's best friend got when he was a little boy. The original tube set was gone, so my Dad rounded up an old clock radio as a donor to this beautiful cabinet. Extracting the radio from the clock and alarm circuitry was fairly easy, but configuring the potentiometers and tuner to fit was a royal pain! The original dial was missing, but the hole in the center made a handy place for a pilot lamp. Halfway through the project, I began to doubt that it would work at all. On first fire-up all I got was FM, which was better than I expected. After many attempts to troubleshoot where the AM went, I finally found the solder joints that I had cracked while installing. Still, the reception was not very good, so I made an antenna with strips of copper tape affixed to the inside of the back panel. Now it goes back to its original owner for his enjoyment! |
