Suggestions for Roadtrips and Fun Activities
This page will forever be "under construction".  Please supply me with your suggestions for group activities that can be organized by non-apathetic postdoc types.  Best recommendations should emphasize all of those things important to postdocs, that they be...CHEAP, require a minimal time commitment, give people new to the area a chance to discover the region around them, and allow for fun and partying with a group of overeducated goofballs. BACKGROUND
Tubing Down the Sacramento River
This is a traditional beer-drinking activity among the students of California State University, Chico.  It involves floating on overinflated tractor tire innertubes down the Sacramento River from the launch site to the midway point (affectionately known as Beer Can Beach) and onward to the destination (the "Washout").  Hazards include "snags" which are exposed trees sticking out from the riverbed bottom.  Peoplewatching is excellent and the whole trip takes about three hours of drifting down the river... great way to burn in that summer sun and catch a buzz.
PLANNING
Requires at least two cars, gas to Chico and back (2 hrs drive from Davis), designated drivers, more than likely an overnite hotel stay and sidetrip to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.
Slated for sometime in the summertime: possibly 4th of July or Labor Day.

Champagne Brunch at Sacramento Brewing Company
WHEN: Any given Sunday, "unlimited" champagne brunch buffet from 10 A.M. - 2 P.M.
PLANNING
Designated drivers needed.  Cost per adult is $17.95.
Brewpub location is Town & Country Village, Fulton at Marconi (Sacramento)
This activity pretty much speaks for itself but might be fun to try out sometime.  I was told by a representative of the brewery that it was a pretty good spread they put out (although we will have to verify that it is still being offered - it might've been TOO GOOD of a deal).

Roadtrip to the Mountains of California/Oregon border region
WHEN: Good destination for those who wish to explore points north and get away from it all for some simple relaxation.
PLANNING
Reliable vehicles and drivers needed for the trip there and back (about 5 hours driving each way).  Lodging in the "Hiker's Hut" at Bradley's Alderbrook Manor is only $12.50 per person per night (and that includes a country breakfast).
California continues into an unspoiled region hours north of Davis known as Siskiyou County.  Mt. Shasta is visible and snow-covered nearly year round.  Proximity to the Pacific Crest Trail and isolation from the rest of the world make this destination worth finding.  Cheap lodging can be had at a Bed & Breakfast in Etna, CA (a hundred-year old Victorian house built by the town's founders), a town of 800 people that has no stoplight, but its own brewery.  Lots of backroads to wander through to see a part of California largely left undiscovered by the rest of the world.
