CROSS STITCH

.. - is the art of creating pictures using crossed stitches.  The first stitch is normally from lower left to upper right, and the second stitch from lower right to upper left.

Any fabric can be used, so long as the threads of the fabric are fairly uniform in thickness.  However, there is a special cross stitch fabric available called Aida cloth.  This fabric clearly delineates each square to be stitched, and is the easiest fabric for a beginning stitcher.  Aida cloth comes in a variety of stitches per inch, 14 count being the most popular.  The count ranges from 11 count to 22 count.  The cloth also comes in a variety of colors.

Regular embroidery thread is used for cross stitch.  This is available in various brands, and a multitude of color and shades, and in six threads per skein, which can easily be separated..  Depending on the number of stitches per inch, one, two, three or more threads are used at the same time.  Unique colors can be created by one or two threads of different colors.
