| Waxing and Waning moons on the sides of the chalice. Four views of the moon, three hares to chase it. |

| This chalice is carved from the bottom section of a very substantial cow horn. The colours are naturally present in the horn and Gareth has used the layers of colour to create the moonlit sky and shadowed ground effect upon which the hare leaps as the moonphases change and finally rests to gaze at the full moon. This was one of Gareth's early pieces, and though the carving isn't as crisp as some of his later work its still my overall favourite piece and I take a great deal of pleasure in handling and using this wonderful thing. I don't feel that the images really do it justice, the tactile qualities just don't come across as an image and a lot of detail is lost even at fairly high resolution. Sally |
