MY THOUGHTS ON...
EVANESCENCE
While I know many people who hate this band... in fact most of my friends don't like them very much... there is something about Evanescence that speaks to me. Perhaps it is the contrast of the loud and harsh guitar tones against the sweet voice on lead vocals, the fact that this is some music I can actually sing and think I sound a lttle decent, or it might just be the fact that the lyrics them selves are works of art from a poetic point of view, dark, sinister, full of imagery and beauty... Whatever the reason, I like Evanescence. While most hate the song "Bring Me to Life" I know every word... I like the words, the voice, the aesthetic principles if you will. Even more so is the song "My Immortal." I didn't even know this song was by them. I just loved it. Its so beautiful and yet so heartfelt and painful in what it says. Its truely indescribable. I wouldn't go as far to say Evanescence was one of my favorite bands... but they may be one of my favorite lyricists. They are just perfect for a dramatic, self-pitying sap like me.
Marraige
Today in English class we had a discussion on marraige. Basically the discussion revolved around if it was necessary to have the foundation of marraige for a couple to live together forever and have children. Alot of the people in my class have a religious background, this I know, though I am one of the more practicing of them. But it suprised me to find that people took marraige so lightly. Most people in my class thought that people didn't even need to get married to live and have children with some one if they truly love them, because hey its just like you are married right? They figured marraige was nothing but a formality, its just a piece of paper, which to me seems that they think it means nothing. it bothered me because I know that many of them are religious and that if they had such background that they would have reason not to think the way they did or say the things they say.
Its like we are married so why do it? That is the question and remarks posed. Well if people don't want to get married that is their own choice. But it seems to me, if people are making the commitment to be together "forever" why not get married? If they are afraid of the confinements they must not REALLY want to be with that person forever? And if they want to escape the mess aof a divorce if it doesn't work out... well in five years with the common law they will still have property issues to deal with so not much mess is diverted. I don't know. I suppose every situation is different. But the comment that marraige is just a formality really got to me. I can't express all my ideas in a very articulate way so that my arguement is concrete, but I hope you understand my concerns. Marriage is so much more than a piece of paper. It is a declaration of love, an institution of bonding, of matrimony, of... whatever you want to say in accordance to my thoughts, but it is not JUST a piece of paper.
The NEWS
Recently, I have decided that I detest watching the news. Actually, I detest the news in general. Mostly because it pushes every ounce of evil and misconduct in the world into the face and lives of every American. I am not suggesting that I think we all should live in a surreal daze, oblivious to the common man in front of us. I think it is important to be at least somewhat certain about the activities in the nation and world. But I get disgusted when I see stories of horrific orgin being repeated in so many numerous ways it dulls our sense of innocence in that area. People are so concerned about what they show on TV and if cartoons are too violent. Well this world is more violent and vulgar than any show or movie I have ever seen! Its just the way things are. And sometimes the images and stories presented are a complete bias and presented as truths. The whole reality of life makes me sick. I suppose this is actually part of growing up. I somehow understand the thoughts of Holden now, more than ever before.
The Election
Impeach Bush, Impeach Bush.. That is all I have heard these past couple days. I am sure if Kerry had won we would be hearing similar things about him from Bush supporters. It's crazy how one event in our country has us completely divided. What happened to UNITED WE STAND,DIVIDED WE FALL? I remember that saying being screamed through out every aspect of life after 9/11. Everyone was so "patriotic." Have we so easily forgotten this lesson that was taught to us only a few years ago?
This is the way  I see it. The election is over, what was going to happened happened and there is little that one can do about it. We can't just impeach a president because we feel the other should have won. That isn't that way our government works. So instead of griping, try and just be proud of your country. For some it may be hard because they only see things getting worse. Well if things are going to get worse being negative and divided against your own country is not going to be a good defense. As Americans we must get rid of our soft under belly by finding some common grounds and unite. I can't believe that I am buying into the 9/11 lingo, but it is true! United we can still stand but divided we will surely fall.
