RANDOMNESS by A. Herold 2002
What has happened to humor these days? Where did the exciting simplicity go? The wholesomeness and clean fun of a good laugh have long since gone. Now dont get me wrong, I enjoy a dirty joke, a well timed laugh at some one elses expense, or any other humorous vulgarity as much as the next person. But most of the world population is missing out on one of the best forms of humor by secluding themselves to old, boring, routine humor. The long since forgotten randomness! Yes the wonderful art of letting yourself go and just saying whatever you want, whenever you want for a laugh is hardly practiced anymore. And I want to know why. For what reason is something so pure and hilarious being expelled from our society?
There are many plausible explanations for this question. Perhaps parents were right and all that garbage penetrating through our society has actually numbed us. So now not only are people desensitized to the evils of the world but now they are becoming numb to basic forms of humor. Or maybe people lack the intelligence now a days to understand the random form of humor. And so if some one were to unexpectedly blurt out Im dancing like a monkey! their audience would get confused and ask what compelled them to say that or why they feel their movements are that of a primate. Or possibly there is an alien race who is gaining control over every human mind and slowly diluting it, eventually leaving us all as senseless as sheep so they can bend us to their every will.
While these may be true in some cases I think the reason that the worlds random sense of humor is depleting is a simple case of fear. A fear of embarrassment. A fear of rejection. People have associated the act of being random with being weird. And somewhere along the line, the word weird was given a negative connotation and is now perceived as un-cool. Since the natural human instinct is to seek the highest state of coolness possible, people dont risk embarrassment and being rejected because they spouted off in search for a laugh. Instead they confine themselves to routine humor.
But really what is there to be afraid of? The answer most likely is that no one will realize the humor in the randomness of the moment and the attempt at comedy will fail. However, such fears need not exist. Random humor is infallible when it comes to getting a few chuckles. The reason being no one expects it. No one expects someone to run down a hall yelling, My mom is a hamster! leaving them stunned and perplexed. Thus the element of surprise, along with the oddity of the situation, leaves the audience no choice but to laugh.
This off the wall way to laughter is truly the best form of comedy. Not only is it hilarious, but also it continuously stays unpredictable since it is concocted on a whim. It would be a shame to exclude such a marvelous thing from enriching the world with laughter. So the next time your friends and you need a good laugh, dont resort to repeating the routine jokes. No, instead look at your friends, smile, and say, Theres a winter party in my pants. Randomness never fails.
