DVDs to DIVX

This guide will help you make divx disks that can be playable on all Pcs that meet the systems requirement. Importants: Divx disk cannot be play on standalones dvd player. You will need a powerful cpu(pII450 or above) to get good playback result.

Software you will need:

Vobdec-newest version recommended(allow you to copy dvd files to harddrive)

Flaskmpeg

Divx codec- needed for the conversion and playback

Mp3 codec(sometimes come bundle with the divx codec)

Window media player( newest version)-to play divx disk

Any cdr burning software

virtualdub( fix audio/video syncing problem)

Find these tools in my links section

Install all these programs according to their own included manual.

Step 1:Copying DVD files to harddrive

Startup Vobdec and start ripping the vob files to your hardrive(read the included manual). If you are limited to 3 gig of harddrive then just rip the first 2 vob files which is about 2 gig. For the rest of you who can copy the whole movie, copy the .ifo files to the directory you rip the vob files to. Copy the .ifo file that is number in sequence to your vob file. This will allow you to copy subtitle.

Note: VobDec should be able to decrypt any movie. However it's possible - but improbably - that it will fail on some movies. This might be the case when your movie is not encrypted - deselect the Use Key box in that case and press GO, then in the Dos prompt window that opens press S at the beginning of each file and the files will simply be copied - of course you can also simply drag and drop unencrypted files from your DVD drive in Explorer. If you've copied the files and they look garbled - lots of green stuff in the picture - when you play them in a Software DVD player - always do that when you don't decrypt a file then you have to use DOD Speed Ripper. For more information about VobDec also read the VobDec-FAQ.

You will also have to copy the .ifo file corresponding to the main movie. For instance you can see in the picture above that the main movie is contained in vts_02_x.vob, therefore you will need vts_02_0.ifo.

Step 2:Conversion

Startup Flaskmpeg. Click on "file", then choose "open files" if you have only copy parts of the movie. Choose "open dvd" if you have copy the entire movie and it ifo file. For "open files" click on the first vob file and flaskmpeg will see all the vobs as 1 files. For "open dvd" click on the ifo file then you will be able to choose language and subtitle. Now goto option and make sure lsx is the select output format. Now configure the "format ouput" and "global" setting.

For the "format output" use this setting: Chose DivX low-motion, then select configure and set keyframes to 8 seconds, crispness 100 and your desired datarate(it is best if you don't go higher then 910-the higher the datarate the more cpu power you need to playback the movie). Select mpeg layer3 for audio codec at 44,000 Hz (128KB/sec). Note: You can use 48,000hz for audio but it might not work well with some soundcards. If you're using Win98 and can't read the avi afterwards I suggest you make sure you correctly installed all the required software and codec mention above.

For the global setting use this setting: You don't have to change muc here. Check MMX iDCT,which will make the converting process a little bit faster. You can use any resolutiuon you want. Full resolution for DVD is 720x480 for NTSC and 704x576 for PAL. I personal recommend 480x480 for ntsc and 480x576 for pal due to higher cpu requirement at higher resolution. But is is really up to you depending on your Pc's cpu. Also change the "Time Base" settings to 29.97 for NTSC and 25 for PAL. Now go to the select "Decode Audio" from the Audio Tab and be sure to select 44,000 hz (or 48,000hz if you choose it in the "format output" setting). Finally, select your file output name. Remember to choose a drive with enough free space on it. Press OK to proceed with the conversion process. It will take a couple hours to finish.

Step 3:Testing and Fixing

Now test your avi files with window media player. Make sure if the audio is in sync with the video. I everything is good skip to step 4. To fix the syn'ing problem you will need to use virtualdub. Follow this direction:

File -> Open the AVI.

Important!! Go to audio menu and verify that it is set for direct stream copy. Go to the video menu and also check it is for direct stream copy. Then click on the interleaving menu for audio and set preload 500ms and interleave every 100ms. Now finally go to the file menu and click Save AVI. Choose a new file name. It should only take anywhere from 2-5 minutes, if it takes longer, you didnt set direct stream copy) you should now have a perfectly sync'ing DiVX AVI.

Step 4:Cutting and Burning

Since most divx movie fit on a single cd disk you usually don't need to cut it. For those who only convert part of a dvd movie at a time due to insufficient hard disk space, you will need to repeat step 1-3. If you are finish then burn your avi files to a cd or just leave it on your harddisk if you have space. Now please spend some time checking out my sponsors so I can continues to improve this site.
