| Cracker Trail "End of the Season" DOG (or so we thought) - March 22, 2009 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Cracker Trail group met at Paynes Creek State Historic Site (outside of Bowling Green) for what we "thought" would be our last DOG of the season. We had several members with other commitments, but we had several of our new members able t come. Unfortunately for us, the staff at the park has changed. The old staff loved having us there and provided us with a convenient pavilion to use and encouraged all visitors to come by our pavilion to visit (we also fed the staff at our feast). The new staff, though very pleasant, wasn't interested in what we do. . .such is life. So we did not get a pavilion and we hauled our stuff to the general picnic grounds. Fortunately, Paynes Creek has a lovely picnic area and we had a cloudy, but mild day in the low 70's. The only difficulty was about 3:00 PM when the winds picked up to slightly less than gale force and we really had to be careful working our ovens with the blowing sand and charcoal ash. We had a few guests, one couple saw the article about us in the IDOS newsletter in the last issue and came to visit us. They are snowbirds from Michigan and are IDOS members up there. Although they didn't show up prepared to cook with us, they did bring homemade brownies--a sure fire invitation to dinner! They were really fun and we invited them to come and cook with us when they come back next fall. As usual we had a really fun group of folks and a great time was had by all. |

| We normally end our season about now because by the end of April it tends to get really hot here in Florida. It is economical to cook in the summer, since we can just set our Dutch ovens out in the sun and bring them to the shade when what we are cooking is done, saving a lot of charcoal. However, our group has grown and a number wanted at least one more DOG before the summer swelter. So, it appears that this was NOT the "End of Season" DOG after all. We now have the "Hot DOG" scheduled form May 17 at Lake Kissimmee State Park. If you are in the area, stop by - we start cooking about 1:00 PM (or earlier or whenever we can get there from church). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
