What is AIS?
Academic Intervention Services (AIS) is a term used to describe extra instructional services provided by our school to support students who have not met or are at risk of meeting a state standard in a given subject.  They will continue to receive these extra support services until they have achieved the state standard or until they score satisfactorily on an equivalent measure.

Teacher/Team Delivery Plans

Delivery plans may be filled out individually by teacher or collectively with your team. You'll need one for math and one for ELA. You need to turn your plan in to Cheri or Mary Ellen.  The plans will be kept on file with them. A sample plan is posted here.

How to fill out Individual Learning Plans (ILP's)

Individual Learning Plans have two
parts, a cover sheet and a curriculum map (or I Can Do It List).

1. The Cover Sheet--
-Fill out a cover sheet that includes the strategies you will use to address your students' needs.

  2.  Curriculum Map (I Can Do it List)
-Highlight the skills you'll be working on.
-Write the date you begin working on that skill on the left hand side of the page.
-When your students master the skill, write the mastery date on the right opposite the start date.
-Evidence of students' mastery of skills needs to be kept in their AIS folders.
-Every student needs a Cover Sheet and a Core Curriculum Sheet in their folder.
-You do not need to highlight everything on the Core Curriculum Sheet.  Only highlight the items that you'll be working on with your students.

Commonly Asked Questions

Q:  How are my students identified to receive AIS?
A:  Students are identified using multiple measures. In 5th grade ELA and math we use the results of the 4th grade NYS ELA and Math exams.  In 6th -8th grades in math, we use the student's previous year's final exam grade and final average. In 6th - 8th grades in ELA, we use the student's previous year's final exam grade, final average, QRI scores (where available) and TerraNova extended response scores.  In both math and ELA we also use teacher recommendation, parent recommendation and administrative recommendation.

Q:  Am I allowed to bring a student into AIS if he or she hasn't been officially identified?
A:  Yes. You may choose to service any child you feel is at risk. If you choose to do this, please let Cheri or Mary Ellen know so they can update the database.

Q:  What about students who are not identified, but are failing at the end of a five or ten week period?
A:  Students who are being monitored and whose grades slip below 65 must be included in your AIS class. You'll need to contact the Counseling Center to have the student's schedule changed.

Q: What do I have to keep in each student's folder?
A:  Click on the appleApple to see what must be kept in each student's folder

Q: Do I need to keep a folder for the students I monitor?
A: Yes. It must contain copies of the student's 5 week progress reports.

Q: Does Academic Lab time other than 11th period count as AIS time?
A: Yes. Make sure you document the time and what you're doing at that time in your AIS Delivery Plan.

Q:  Do I need to assess my students while they are in AIS?
A:  Yes. You need to use pre and post tests that test the skill you're teaching.  These can be teacher made or company made. The results must be kept in the student's folder.

Q: What do I do if I feel one or more students have made enough progress and don't need AIS services anymore? Is there a way to take them out of the program?
A:  Yes. You need to administer an assessment that is equivalent to the assessment that targeted them for service.  In fifth grade, a normed, parallel assessment must be used. In other grades other measures are sufficient and depend on the reason the student was targeted to receive services. Refer to Enter and Exit Criteria on this page, or ask Cheri or Mary Ellen for resources if you don't know what to use.

Q: What if I have students who have schedule conflicts that prevent them from receiving AIS with the rest of my AIS students?
A: Depending on the situation, teams have solved this problem in different ways. Sometimes a student's AIS requirements can be provided at a different time.  Sometimes his or her requirements can be provided by a different team.  If you need help figuring out a solution to a particular situation, contact Cheri or Mary Ellen. They'd be happy to help.

Q: Can a parent request that their child drop AIS classes?
A: No.  AIS is state mandated. A parent may not remove a child by requesting that they not attend.
