1) The Chimes of Midnight (9/10)
One of the best audios all around and certainly the scariest. This has become a Christmas tradition for me along with Charlie Brown and Rudolph. McGann and Fisher are top notch as are the supporting cast. Great music and very, very scary. Extremely well written; fresh and fast.
2) The Girl Who Never Was (8.10)
3) Zagreus (8/10)
I thought the idea of using past Doctor Who actors in different roles would be weird or confusing, but it worked nicely. I liked that it was fanwanky and had many continuity references. I actually got goose bumps when the horn at the Tower of Rassilon sounded. This was very fun and one of those audios that works every once in a while. However, I'm really not liking the whole Doctor-Charley "I love you" relationship that they're pushing. I've said it before, and I'll say it again what is with you people who think making the Doctor more human, and adding a sexuality to the character is a good idea?
4) The Time of the Daleks (7/10)
Clever use of Daleks, but the novelty wears off rather quickly (like with 'Davros', we know they are up to no good so why drag it out so long?). Because of that this only rates a 7. Good performances all around and I like when stories do neat things with clocks.
5) Seasons of Fear (7/10)
Paul McGann at his finest. Some funny lines and good moments. Unfortunately even McGann's performance can't make this above average however. The story is kind of blah.
6) The Sword of Orion (7/10)
This probably should be rated a little higher. I really like it though many, many people don't. This was the first real chance for me to experience the 8th Doctor in space/the future (not counting novels) and I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the music was good (unlike my friend John, but then again John and I seem to disagree on quite a few little things when it comes to the audios and the novels).
7) Minuet in Hell (7/10)
I used the rate this a lot higher, but the novelty has worn off a little and the stupendously bad accents keep bringing it down. I love the mention of Sam in the Doctor's companions, and McGann is great. Nice to see him with the Brigadier too. Picturing Charley in some of the clothes is very appealing too.
8) The Last (7/10)
Perhaps this should have been called "At Last", because at last we have a divergent universe story I liked! It was pretty good. Creepy music, interesting story, and some great lines by Paul McGann (though some of his reactions didn't really suit the McGann Doctor as much as I think they'd suit the Tom Baker Doctor I'm talking writing and acting here). C'Rizz is still boring for the most part. And the Kroka is actually starting to live up to his potential of villain (or whatever). I enjoyed it.
9) Memory Lane (7/10)
This one was pretty good. Nice and short episodes and good acting overall. It was a pretty neat idea that they didn't try to do too much with. I could really picture this one.
10) Neverland (7/10)
I actually liked this one a bit. Many people didn't, but I find that most of the people who didn't are the same people who thought destroying Gallifrey in the novels was a good idea, so it's no surprise. I like Gallifrey, and I like 'fanwank'. Both to degrees, so every once in a while I enjoy a story like this, and it's also why I look forward to the Leela/Romana audios.
11) Caerdroia (7/10)
This one was also quite good, though not quite as good as "The Last". It was a little talky at points, but the episodes were kept short and it was relatively witty. But it was Paul McGann's performance that got this above a rating of 6. I'm also happy as it seems to be getting towards the end of the divergent universe arc (at least it seems to be - I think the 8th Doctor returns to the normal universe at the end of this series... I hope so at any rate).
12) The Next Life (7/10)
This was pretty good and I am very happy to see the Doctor and Charley return to their own universe. There was some good character development here and I liked the whole Doctor/Charley creature thing. Not bad, all-in-all, especially since the majority of the divergent universe stories were a failure in my opinion.
13) Terror Firma (6/10)
Terry Malloy is awesome in this, and the thing about the Doctor's past companions was cool (and indeed may spark some new fan fiction), but the whole story was very choppy and never really came together very well.
14) Embrace the Darkness (6/10)
This one could have been like a really good 80's-monster-in-an-underwater-or-spaceship flick. However, like most of those 80's movies, it falls a little short. Could have been really scary, but instead it was kind of boring. And I really don't like that one actor's voice at all (the guy who plays Alby in the Dalek Empire audios). He bugs me.
15) Storm Warning (6/10)
Not bad for the first audio with McGann. Certainly it was my most anticipated audio. Could have been much, much better, but McGann was pretty good. We all know I love Charley. Could someone please tell me who thought (and then who agreed) that Ramsey was a good idea?
16) Scherzo (6/10)
This was at times excellent, and at times boringly bad. They did a pretty good job capturing the creepiness of the "Divergent Universe", especially with that slightly high-pitch, but not annoying hum. However, it doesn't matter what they're talking about when you have two characters standing around just talking it's going to be boring. And we are hit with way, way too much "I love you" crapola. Please BF, get away from this (though they obviously have no plans on doing so). I don't listen to Doctor Who for love stories. The Divergent Universe itself works in this one story, but it's seems this whole season (and the next one maybe) are to be set in the Divergent Universe. Perhaps "divergent" means "boring". It's hard to believe this is the same guy who wrote The Chimes of Midnight.
17) The Stones of Venice (6/10)
Here's another novel fanatic's fav. It's extremely boring. Magrs writes it as if it's a novel and so the actors acts it as if they're reading well-written lines. Well-written in a novel maybe. This is not drama. It did have some good music near the beginning.
18) The Natural History of Fear (6/10)
Interesting and had some cool bits in the last episode. This story may have been a 7 or even an 8 out of 10 if it hadn't been so long. Episodes 1-3 were over 30 minutes each and episode 4 was over 40 minutes long!!! 40 minutes for one episode! Give me a break! More is not always better; it really is. BFA episodes should run right around 25 minutes each, 30 at the absolute maximum. Even the best stories would start to feel too long with episodes over 30 minutes. It just becomes too much talking. Well, three Divergent Universe episodes down and I'm very disappointed. Mostly in the editing.
19) Other Lives (5/10)
Some semi-interesting bits and some good acting, but otherwise a real bore. Is it coincidence that the 8th Doctor audios have pretty much sucked since C'Rizz showed up?
20) Faith Stealers (5/10)
The more of these Divergent Universe 8th Doctor audios I listen to, the more Scherzo seems like a masterpiece; at least it *seemed* different. The rest of these are just plain boring, and could be set in our universe just as easily. Again I think of Star Trek Voyager. This story had one or two funny bits otherwise it would have rated a 4. At least it wasn't as long as some of the previous Divergent stories. C'Rizz is still boring. I'd rather see BF use more past companions (like Sarah Jane... why can't she team up with one of the other Docs for a story or two?) than boring goofballs like C'Rizz. Charley and Evelyn are well done, but C'Rizz and Erimem are boring.
21) Something Inside (5/10)
An interesting setting that could have been very atmospheric but wasn't. It got better in part 3 but still didn't really amount to much. I've had enough of C'Rizz.
22) Invaders From Mars (5/10)
The idea of the whole Wells' hysteria is always so much better than seeing it happen in movies or audio. I always find the re-enactments rather ridiculous as I can't fathom these stupid idiots thinking the whole thing is real and running for the hills. Guess I had to be there. After a re-listen, I'm dropping this one point due to the unbelievably bad cartoonish American film-noir gumshoe voice acting.
23) The Twilight Kingdom (5/10)
Well, the first divergent universe season is over and it was not very good at all. Get the Doctor back to the real universe soon please. C'Rizz is boring. At least they've laid off the Charley/Doctor love thing a little. Another over-long story with some interesting bits, but mostly just a boring, run-of-the-mill story that could have been set in any universe. What's the point?
24) Absolution (4/10)
At least they got rid of C'Rizz finally. But it also looks like the end of Charley, and not a happy exit either. Oh well, I'm enjoying the 8th Doctor/Lucy audios.
25) Creed of the Kromon (4/10)
Here we go again. Star Trek DS9 is going to be sooo different from TNG they said. Then it was just TNG on a space station. Star Trek Voyager is going to be sooo different from TNG as we have a whole new universe! Then it was the same old same old. Doctor Who in the divergent universe. It'll be sooo different as we're in the "DIVERGENT UNIVERSE!!!" (echo echo echo). Same old same old. And boring to boot. And does each episode have to be over 30 minutes long!!?? Crap.
26) Time Works (4/10)
The very definition of "blah". Too bad too because the concept was kind of cool (and reminded me a little of an old Twilight Zone episode). Paul McGann was excellent as usual. Too bad his stories have been bland for the most part.
27) Scaredy Cat (3/10)
Yawn! I get the feeling this was supposed to be scary like "Chimes of Midnight". The only thing it was, was boring.
