7th Doctor BFAs

By Chris Heffernan

7th Doctor BFAs - Average = 6.2/10

1) The Fearmonger (9/10)

The first one I listened to. Great use of audio to tell the story. Superb casting and acting. I've listened to this one over and over again. Very scary at the end, and such great use of atmosphere.

2) The Shadow of the Scourge (9/10)

At first listen, I was excited because of the New Adventure/Benny crossover. I love the New Adventure feel to the whole thing. The acting was good by all, and it was very scary. The only thing I'm not too sure about is the fact that the Scourge talk like Cybermen (they don't sound like Cybermen, they just say stuff like "Leader!" in very Cybermanesque fashion).

3) Dust Breeding (8/10)

Here's another one that I seem to go against the grain. I liked it a lot. The Master twist was unexpected. The crazy artist guy was awesome when he became the Warp Core (what's the deal with that name though?) - he was a truly psychotic villain. I like Bev Tarrant too so it was nice to see her. Wouldn't like her as a companion per se, but she's nice every once in a while. Very atmospheric and dark.

4) The Fires of Vulcan (8/10)

The best use of the audio medium of all the audios to date. This is a story you simply could not do on TV unless you had a HUGE budget and even then probably not. McCoy was in top form as usual and Bonnie Langford was also very good. I could really picture this one nicely; and the picture had no wobbly sets.

5) The Genocide Machine (8/10)

I like just about everything in this one (except the idiotic librarian who was a pale rip-off Douglas Adams character wannabe). The Daleks were truly scary and another great use of atmosphere. We are introduced to Bev Tarrant (see above).

6) The Harvest (8/10)

I like it every once in a while when we join the story in progress so-to-speak. Like The Fearmonger, the Doctor and Ace are already investigating a plot as we join the story. It works great. I found the story interesting and atmospheric and it was a nice new twist on a Cybermen story. Hex is good too and I think I'll like him as a companion.

7) Bang-Bang-a-Boom (8/10)

I don't think many people enjoyed this one, but I do. Patricia Quinn ties India Fisher as the sexiest voice in all the audios. She alone makes me listen to it again. It actually had some very funny bits (ie: the Doctor playing the spoons on stage), but it also had many, many bits that the cast/director tried to make funny. If you have to try to make something funny, it won't be; it had to be inherently funny in the material (just look to SNL skits that work and don't, or even Star Trek movie bits that work and don't). If it wasn't for those unfunny bits, this would have gotten a 9.

8) The Rapture (8/10)

Another one that I don't think many people liked, but I do quite a bit. Unfortunately 4 episodes is a little long for the story (if it had been 3 episodes long, ie: cut about 25 minutes I probably would have given it an 8*). I like the music quite a bit and really love the very end of the story. The only thing I don't like is the whole 'rave' attitude; I still don't understand that mentality. I like parties and clubs are okay, but raves just escape me. I must be getting very, very old. *Update: After another listen, I've bumped this to an 8, mainly because of Gabriel's music (it fits the story great) and the neat theme song.

9) Live 34 (8/10)

I do like how they used the audio medium here; the entire adventure is a radio broadcast. However, I much prefer these audios to be huge epics (like Fires of Vulcan); make it something you couldn't possibly do on TV, not because it's audio, but because the budget would be far too big for TV. It was a good story though. Some of it was exciting, but it barely rates an 8 because a lot of it sounded so much like a radio news program that it was almost boring at times.

10) Frozen Time (7/10)

A solid story. Much better use of the Ice Warriors than Red Dawn.

11) Night Thoughts (7/10)

Again, this seemed to be a story that wanted to be a sort of Chimes of Midnight/Ghost Light mix. Unlike Scaredy Cat however, this one was actually very scary, and that's why it rated as high as a 7. Unfortunately the acting from the guest cast left a lot to be desired, and the story didn't seem to make much sense (in the same way Ghost Light made no sense). Because of those things, it didn't rate higher than a 7.

12) Master (7/10)

An interesting take on the Master. It had some good scary moments and a neat back story for the Doctor and the Master. But once again it was far, far too long. It didn't get good until part 2, and part 4 was almost an hour long!

13) The Dark Flame (6/10)

I was really looking forward to this one, and episode 3 has some great character interaction, but overall it was very boring. And wow, what a neat idea to make one of the villains sound like a comic book villain with his slow, deep voice; what a shock when he turned out to be... a villain! Update: I've listened to it again and enjoyed it much more the second time; still not quite enough to raise it to a 7 though.

14) Colditz (6/10)

I do like the mix of drama with comical under currents but when the villain is so inept it doesn't works at all. Lots of threats + no action = no consequences and therefore very boring.

15) Dreamtime (6/10)

Some good incidental music and a few neat bits, but overall just kind of boring. I do like Hex though.

16) Nocturne (6/10)

Not a bad little story, and well acted, but overall just not exciting enough. Could have been better.

17) Valhalla (6/10)

I like the feel of this story; dark futuristic city, companionless Doctor, giant insects. But it just never really hit the mark or got past the initial neat idea.

18) Unregenerate (6/10)

One really neat idea but a whole lot of stuff happening that made no sense until they bring everything together near the end. Basically just kind of boring and never really hit the mark.

19) Flip Flop (5/10)

The clever thing about this story is that you can start with disc 1 or disc 2 and the story will still flow and make sense. It works great too. Too bad the actual story is boring.

20) Red (5/10)

After episode 1 I thought this was going to be really good. Unfortunately episodes 2 and 3 were pretty much rehashes of episode 1. The whole "Red, Red, Red..." thing was neat and kind of scary at first and then just got really annoying by episode 4. Episode 4 did have a cool "fight inside the Doctor's head" bit (which is always fun) and the voice of White Noise was great, but overall this was too repetitive and boring.

21) The Death Collector's/Spider's Shadow (5/100

22) No Man's Land (4/10)

A real yawner. Hard to make World War I boring, but they managed it. A little blurb at the end about "The Forge" from some of the other audios.

23) Excelis Decays (4/10)

This would have been slightly higher it it hadn't been for Yee Je Tso; the absolute worst acting job in any BFA to date. Yikes. Too bad too because Anthony Stewart Head was actually very good in this one.

24) The Settling (4/10)

I've never been a big fan of pure historicals; that is to say, historicals without any monsters or sci-fi stuff going on. Usually I find them very boring and this one was no exception. Extremely boring, from a time period I a) know nothing about and b) care nothing about. Also too much Hex and not enough Doctor. I do like Hex, but I don't want him as the main character. Ace was great though.

25) The Dark Husband (3/10)

This tried to be funny at first and failed. I had a very hard time getting through it. It did get slightly better in part 4, but not much. A badly directed bore-fest. Slyvester tried his best though as usual.
