Captain Action was the Ideal Toy Company's answer to GIJOE , but instead of making another military figure, Ideal decided to capitalize on the Super Hero craze spawned by the comics, Saturday morning cartoons and of course the live action Batman & Superman shows. Captain Action could change costumes into different DC, Marvel and comic strip heroes of the era. It was and remains my favorite toy from my childhood. Although Captain Action was only produced by Ideal from 1966 to 1968, it has established itself as the most expensive figure line to collect on a per piece basis. My enthusiasm for this hobby hit it's peak in 1997 when I was lucky enough to successfully pitch the idea of bringing back Captain Action to Playing Mantis, an up & coming collectible toy company which has since proved itself as a leader in the field of diecast and model kit reproductions. I was fortunate enough to be a part time consultant to Playing Mantis and worked on the line with their staff for about 3 years. It was a fun ride while it lasted. I have made many new friends along the way for which I am greatful. Although Playing Mantis has discontinued the line, the infusion of new product will allow it to continue on in the custom figure market which is a lot of fun.
