Are You In It For The Money?

When people find out you are trying to develop an internet business or any other kind of independent concern, that's the kind of question you hesitate before answering, isn't it? If you say, "yes" you feel you'll be looked upon as shallow and just l ooking out for number one. If you say "no" you feel you're being perceived as a hypocrite. If you pause at all you get that "Ah ha!" look. You know the one. It's the "I knew you were just looking to make money all along!"
Excuse me, should we be condemned because of that? We are ALL in it for the money. Isn't that what private enterprise is all about, anyway? People in the corporate environments are doing the exact same thing every day of their lives. Are we hanging them? Somehow, that is supposed to be a "reasonable" expectation.
When you are independent (or trying to be) nobody works this hard just so they are largely viewed as a long-suffering hero People Magazine can't wait to feature. Making money to provide is a powerful motivator, no? Why shouldn't the experience of financial reward after hours/days/months be part of the package?
And, by the way, what's wrong with taking care of number one? Who else are we supposed to be taking care of? Number four, who's the cousin of our next-door neighbor's aunt, three-times removed?
Let's take a visit to the real world for a moment. I'm assuming most people are reading the papers and listening to the news. Good people are losing their jobs like crazy. It's getting worse than many of us have ever seen. Companies are feeling the impact of a slower economy and if they can find an expense to eliminate, then tag, sometimes we're it. The fact that it may be an over-reaction doesn't matter. We don't make the decisions. We just have to live with them.
The sense of animated suspension that sets in is horrific. Sometimes, about-to-be-downsized (is that supposed to be a prettier word than fired, by the way?) employees get lucky enough to be offered a termination "package". It's not always the case, but even if it is, eventually the package runs out!
What are people supposed to do? What are their options? What else, besides the opportunity to grab the monkey by the tail and make money would be their primary focus? What's shallow, greedy or unscrupulous about wanting to put food on the table or pay some bills?
Now if you can make a decision to find another way to produce income and during the course of it do something for somebody else, wonderful. If you can retain your sense of perspective you're ahead of the game because you're probably thinking of being in it for the long haul and that makes perspective important. If you make a few friends along the way, you're in an even better place. Way ahead, as a matter of fact.
So, summing up, counselor, if you are ever confronted with the question: "Are you in it for the money", don't be shy, or ashamed. Step right up to the plate, look 'em in the eye and say, "That's a big part of it." Or, push the envelope and say, "You bet your bippy!" You will probably be surprised at the reactions. Mostly laughter at the sheer honesty of your response. Because most of us are exactly the same way. We just occasionally let what we perceive as humility and/or "good manners" get in the way.
I've got great manners. And a few other attributes that I think are just dandy. But I'd like to know what that's got to do with "being in it" with the goal of making making a better life with more financial and personal freedom. Can you spell n-o-t-h-i-n-g?
