Thanksgiving is almost here! Fall is in the air (well, as much as it can be here in South East Texas!). And, plans are in the works for the annual Thanksgiving meal that our church delivers to the shut ins in our area.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, ladies (and men!) in our congregation prepare a meal complete with turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings to those in our community who are shut ins. The Sunday School classes prepare the food. One class prepares the turkey, one the dressing, one the green beans,... you get the picture.

This year I think we are all mindful that we have quite a lot to be thankful for. Sept. 11th is still very much on our minds as we go about our daily lives. Many of us have loved ones serving in the military or serving as a home defense. Police officers and firemen are our family, too.

We need to remember that we are all humanity. My belief is that we are all God's children. Many of you have different beliefs than mine, but I hope it does not hinder our friendship and mutual caring. Prehaps a little more tolerance in the world is in order.

The Power Of "Please" and "Thank You"

I'm not a big shopper. Never have been really. But when I do shop I know what I want and probably set records getting in and out of the stores.

Yesterday, I ventured out. Needed a few things: groceries, books, a few magazines, window-shopping for new carpeting.

I don't know alot about carpeting. I know what I like and I expect the person selling it to me to fill me in. Another couple was in there searching around, as well. It was obvious they needed help and explanations. Just like we all do sometimes.

There were two salespersons. I got lucky.

One was, among other things, tired. It was obvious. Short sentences. Quick retorts to questions. Rolling eyes. Rubbing eyes. Laughing in that "superior" way. In short, he made the potential customers feel foolish. I could tell by the way they looked at each other after asking what they thought were reasonable questions (they were).

The other salesperson was my kind of guy. Very courteous, very informative and certainly lacking in cockiness. As soon as I asked my first question he asked me what my name was - Please. I gave it; he followed up with a Thank You. And proceeded to use it on a regular basis.

When I said I was just window shopping, I was thanked again for thinking of doing business with them. He then went on to show me a couple of specials that were coming up next week.

He could have kept that to himself. But he didn't.

To be honest, while I was getting all this superlative attention I was also watching the patterns going on with that other salesperson and his customers. The word "initimidation" came to mind. It was also clear they wanted to leave the store.

How stupid can you be! Insulting a potential purchaser? All I could think was, "They won't be back and I don't blame them."

Good customer service has become almost obsolete in recent times. The rudeness, the arrogance, the I-don't-care attitudes have replaced what to me should be everyday courtesy. I will never in life understand it.

Were I the boss, he'd be gone. I can accept tired. I cannot accept allowing a customer to think my competition is better than I am.

Needless to say, I accepted the business card of my salesperson and will more than likely go right on back when I decide to purchase.

I am dismayed at how people ignore the power and value of basic good manners and pleasantries in business. Please and Thank You go a long, long way. They make others feel better and secure (sometimes, even important), leading up to wanting to do business with you.

You start acting like the customer is doing you some big favor and you might as well open the door to let them out. Because "out" is where they're going. Why would they come back - more abuse?

Do you use the same user name and password for each of your safelists, programs, email accounts, etc.? That's not a good idea! You need to vary your username and passwords from program to program.

Okay, I know. You use just one user name and password because it's easier to remember. I print out a copy of the confirmation letter I receive from each program (safelist, email account) and make a file for it. You can also list each in a small spiral notebook if you need this information to be a little handier to get to.

The best passwords are the ones that use letters, numbers, and symbols (if allowed). Be creative!
