Those "Little Lessons" We Learn From Our Folks

There is never a time when your child is "too young" to understand the value of helping anyone less fortunate. Never.

When I was very young my mother used to collect for the March of Dimes. Every year, sometimes more than once a year, she'd be out there knocking on people's doors and asking them for a donation to what we know is a very worthy cause. Sometimes, at my pleading, she'd take me with her.

I learned very early on that there are two kinds of people in the world. Those that are caring, receptive and want to do whatever they can to make a small dent in a large dilemna. Then, those that feel they have their own problems and that's the end of it. Most fall into the first group.

We underestimate what a very small child tunes in to and absorbs. To this day, I remember what my mom taught me about helping someone else. And that includes the times we are going through difficult times ourselves. It slammed home to me last year.

I had some extra money so I was thinking of (and fantacizing about) getting a few personal treats for myself. A massage, a facial, filling up my freezers with things like shrimp and other seafoods I love but don't indulge very often.

Then I read a newspaper ad about the homeless and the hungry. On top of that, I somehow turned onto a broadcast on TV about the very same organization. They were begging for donations.

I realized that somehow I'd get by without the personal "treats". At first, I felt guilty about such silly extravagances in the first place. Then I realized I'm only human. THEN it occurred to me that if I did have these few bucks I need to do what my mother had taught me. Give to someone who really needs it. My body isn't used to regular massages so what's the big deal? A facial I can do with a small avocado. And my freezers already have enough food in them.

I went to the grocery store and bought six turkeys. I even got "teased" at the store by people who suspected why I had so many turkeys in that cart. I knew I was on the right track. Then I had them sent to the outlet that was going to provide food for thousands of people so that they could have a decent Thanksgiving (and Christmas) dinner. The letter I received back made me feel like a million bucks!

I have my mom to thank for instilling some very decent, very worthwhile values. So, parents, please don't ever underestimate the power of any of your actions as they relate to what your child is picking up. I grew up to be a caring, sensitive person because my parents made it clear it was a value to strive for.
