Safelists are sort of a sore point with me right now. I've told you about my venture (disastrous!) into owning a safelist. I've decided to not let that deter me from searching for my "prefect" opportunity!

However, I did decide to change my advertising strategy. Other factors other than the "safelist fiasco" helped me with that decision. I decided to drop off of almost all of the numerous lists to which I belonged. The majority made unsubscribing easy and no problem, but there were a few with which I'm still having trouble. But, I'm not letting it ruin my day! That's why there is a delete button on the email program.

I don't advocate my plan of action to everyone. Safelists have their uses and place in the order of things. There are lots of responsibly run safelists. Just use common sense and be responsible yourself.

"Wow, You Work At Home? Must Be Nice."

When my friend made that statement it was clear she meant that I, unlike herself, wasn't "really" working. But, even if I was, well, it wasn't "really" the same thing.

She was more right than she can ever imagine.

At my "real" job I had extra eyes, arms and legs if it became too much. Here, I'm president, accountant, administrative assistant, marketer, salesman, pencil sharpener, mailman, copier, printer, errand boy. Chief, cook & bottle washer!

I get to answer the phone at all times because there's nobody to call out "Can you get that for me?" If the computer acts up, there's no "Help Desk" to quickly dial up. If I get sick, there's no one I to call and plead "Can you help me get a few things off my desk?". If I run out of writing pads, I can't lean over and borrow one.

If my printer checks out on me there's not another one I can program my computer to. Same goes for any copying. There's no spare "across the hall". I don't have the power of a corporation behind me when it comes to advertising. I'm it!

People fail to realize that when you are trying to establish your own business you are working like an octopus on steroids. You put in longer hours and are in a constant state of promotion. You certainly don't take the "breaks" others think you do. At my "real" job I took my fair share of breaks, just like everyone else. Here? Nope. Maybe the relaxing comes later, but initially? Not a prayer. All you can think of is how much time you are wasting when you should be plugging away at getting your business off the ground.

Discipline becomes an art form. If you're serious, you become harder on yourself than any previous supervisor you ever had. If only people knew! I never worked so hard in my life! And I was always an overachiever!

Sure, there are absolute advantages. The luxury not to have someone looking over your back. Freedom from the dreaded commute. Ridiculous emergencies created by incompetent or self-important others, skewed performance reviews, mandatory clothing/food budgets and corporate politics are kicked to the curb. It pains me to realize I now know way too many people who are feeling the stress and edginess as it concerns the longevity of their jobs. They don't even have a back-up plan! Those things alone make it worth the hard work of working at home.

But it "must be nice"? Like I said, maybe later. In the meantime, does anyone know where I can go to get myself cloned?

When's the last time you updated or upgraded your virus protection program? That long ago, huh? With all the new virus that are born every day and the new variations that show up, you really need to keep your anti-virus program updated.
