Safelist Problems

As everyone is aware, there are numerous scams on the internet. There are many ways that the sharks prey on the unsuspecting. Herein is a tale of a scam that I, myself, recently fell for, paying for ownership of a safelist.

I saw an ad about owning your own safelist and replied. It sounded good. I could charge a fee for people to join and post their ads once a day. I was charged a fee to register a name for my safelist and was promised a year's hosting by the provider of the script.

There were a few minor problems to begin with and then, to my shock, a message informing me that the files had been hacked into and all data had been lost. Everyone needed to sign up again.

That made me nervous. I was really uncertain as to whether or not I should continue to market the safelist. I was asking for a fee to join and hesitated asking people to join if hackers would continue to be a problem.

The safelist script owner assured me that he was moving to a more securehosting. Then, I had a post from someone who was not on the list. I contacted the script owner again, and he explained that I must have given someone my user name and password. I hadn't, but had used that name and password when I signed up for other lists where he had also written the script. I immediately changed my information!

I finally decided to try again to market the list. I had money tied up that I hated to lose. I opened up the list for free to the first 50 people who responded. I got a great response. I signed them up myself, and of course, the problems begin again!

Some of the new members were unable to use the list as they were using Netscape, an apparent script no-no. Others had different, but solvable problems. Things settled down and the list seemed to be working.

BOOM! The bottom dropped out again! The safe list provider had lost his servers and we were shut down! He referred me (along with others who had also been affected) to another safelist provided. I recognized the name as I had belonged to several of his lists in the past and had problems with them as well.

As I said, I was in the hold for the money that I had paid the first guy. I decided to try the new provider. He wanted to charge me even after the first one assured me that he would honor what I had already paid. Emails flew back and forth and the new provider finally agreed to honor the payment already made. Cool! My safe list was up and running again!

I had to go out of town for a few days. Then I got sick and..yada,yada, yada. I noticed no mail from the list except for one complaint. I emailed the new provider and...WHAM! He has problems (issues) with the first guy, so no list unless I pay him. Now!

I've emailed the first provider and gotten no answer. I asked the second guy why I had not been notified before he shut my list down. Granted, I was a little rude when I asked, but this is sooooo frustrating! I have finally decided to accept the fact that I've lost the money and move on.

The moral of this story, children, is please be very careful of purchasing safelist scripts and/or programs! Check them out very carefully! In retrospect, I haven't seen a lot of advertising for the 2nd safelist provider lately. And, I get a lot of email ads. Hopefully, he is no longer in the business of gypping naive people like me out of their money!

To Run Disk Clean Up:

Before you begin, turn off your screen saver and make sure that all other programs are closed. Double check the programs in the tray. Other programs should not be open and/or running when you are running disk clean.

To begin: Go to Start, then Program, then Accessories, then System Tools, and finally, Disk Cleanup.

Make sure the correct drive is selected and press enter. This will bring up a box that details what can be "cleaned". You will be told how much space you will recover if you delete all of the marked files. Usually there will be "Temporary Internet Files", "Downloaded Program Files", "Recycle Bin", and "Temporary Files". Mark or unmark any as you wish. You should have the option to view what files you will be deleting.

Press okay. You usually don't get a box when Disk Cleanup is finished.

There you have it! You should schedule regular maintenance on your cpu to keep it running in top shape. After all, we are trying to use it to make a living, aren't we?
