The Telephone Plan by Kim Ward

Having a home business has it's rewards, but also has it's challenges. This can be especially true if you have children and you are trying to do your business around them. My oldest who is eleven helps me out a lot when it comes to telephone matters. She helps to keep my other two kids entertained, out of trouble, or tends to them when I am on a business call.

With telephone situations we use to have it where she would write a quick note to avoid interrupting me. Then I could read it when I would have a second to look. I would then shake my head yes or no, or point to leave the room, meaning this is too much for me to answer at his time with a simple yes or no and that I will get back to her. This worked great for a while, but she soon became the one deciding how important an interruption was, and I was getting distracted too often.

So I devised a new plan. If you have a home business and kids, and interruption of calls is a problem, please read on!

If you do not have a certain room where you make your calls this will still work. You need to have 3 things with three colors. I would suggest construction paper and a piece of scotch tape to hold it. You may also draw a phone, or write phone on each piece of paper. First color Red, then Yellow, then Green.

Tape the piece of paper outside the door of the room you are in. Please make it known to the child that even if the door is open, that it still applies. When your calls are over, you take away the paper. If you do not care to use tape on your door, I would suggest being creative. Maybe paint some rocks to put in front of it, or stick colored socks on the door knob. Then you need to explain to the child or children which each color means.

* Red would mean important call, do not disturb under any circumstances, unless is of utmost importance. I have a child who is autistic, if my oldest was watching her while I was in the next room, and something needed my immediate attention, this would be okay. It would not be okay to come in and ask me for a candy bar at that time.

* Yellow would mean still important call, I would rather not be disturbed, a note may be okay, but I would rather have you wait a few minutes until I am off the call.

* Green would mean a note at anytime is okay. If I cannot answer with a yes or a no, I may even be able to write a quick note back, or ask the other person to hold for a moment.

If the paper is not up, I am not on a business call. It is a call that I would not mind some background noise, and you may interrupt me by walking in and saying mom, then wait for me to say what. It is better than a sudden interruption while I am listening to another person talking at the same time.

In my line of work, I only am on the phone for about ten minutes the first time I contact someone. I do this for two reasons. First, the person on the other end usually does not know when my first contact call will be. I try to make it a short call because I know how busy I can be when someone may call, and even though I may really want to talk with them I do not have a lot of time at the time they called for various reasons.

Second, the quicker I make the call the better the chance they will not hear the kids making a bunch of noise is the background. Ever try making a business call with a scream from another room? MOM ... so and so won't let me watch my show! This is not a comfortable situation to say the least. I am very thankful that the business I am in allows me to be able to talk with people efficiently but not for a very long time during the first call. If you do not have a ten minute interview or phone call response for the first call and really need one because of the children, see if one can be devised.

The initial call can be hard with loud kids in the background. It can make you nervous and you should really try to be as comfortable as possible when making business calls. I do try to schedule my calls when the kids are not home, but that is not always possible, so this is an extra option I have. If you have business contacts who call you at home, this could help a lot as well. You can set out your paper as soon as you get on the phone. Keep everything in a handy place.

I may mention in another conversation that I am doing my business around three kids, and there might be background noise. Most people are understanding to that. Many home business people are working around children. If you have established that both of you are working around children, it makes future calls with that person much more comfortable.

Having a telephone plan has made my phone time run a little smoother while kids were at home. I hope it may help you as well, or at least start another idea that may be better for you. One final note I would like to mention. This is not a 100% fool proof method as I am sure you know. If you have kids, there are no guarantees of a noise free background all the time during business calls, that would be wishful thinking to say the least. It is however a plan, a place to start, and it may help to increase the odds for you. Having kids and a home business, one could use better odds, wouldn't you agree?

To Defragment Your Hard Drive

Before you begin, turn off your screen saver and make sure that all other programs are closed. Double check the programs in the tray. If other programs are open and/or running, it will slow the Disk Defragmentter. Be prepared for this to take a while, especially if this is the first time.

To begin: Go to Start, then Program, then Accessories, then System Tools, and finally, Disk Defragmenter.

Make sure the correct drive is selected. This should be C: and click Start.

When Disk Defragmenter is finished, a box will appear with stating that defrag is done. Close the box and the disk defragment is done!
