I realize that promoting a business means getting people's attention and Lord knows the Internet has provided us all with unlimited potential opportunity. However, I am really getting fed up with the outlandish promises that are intentionally geared to people's greed, fears, worries, neuroses, etc.(and I'll bet dollars to doughnuts my words speak for many others). Why put out an ad that screams about how by tomorrow morning our mailboxes will be so overloaded we need to make a trip to the post office to collect the rest?

How hard is it to be a little more upfront and give us a reasonable expectation? Why tell ANYONE they don't need to do any work for a guaranteed income of several thousand a week? Are they promising me an inheritance? That's the only way I'm aware of doing nothing and getting paid for it. People who are looking for an on-line business opportunity are already committed to do some work. That's what it's all about isn't it? WORK From Home? There may be a few super-lazy ones out there, but I would venture to guess the majority are pepared to work hard for the privilege of being able to realize their dreams of freedom from the corporate rat race and all that it entails (commuter traffic, cost of meals, incompetent fools you are forced to report to, etc.).

There seems to be an avalanche of articles of late that speaks to this issue - and they are right! It makes me wonder how legitimate many of these "net opportunities" really are, considering how much feedback is going on. It isn't necessary to promise pie in the sky lies. We'd all just appreciate more of the real facts of life, more blatant honesty, if you will. We're all pretty much aware of the fact that in the real world there are schemers and frauds. The Internet just provides a larger avenue for them to cross. These super-energized commercial advertisements are going to hurt in the long run.

From where I sit and what I hear, what's going to happen is that people are going to be increasingly skeptical about the validity of any promotion (and what's that they say about word of mouth?). Many worthwhile opportunities are not even going to be looked at as people become more and more jaded about the whole affair. A decrease in sales activity won't all be because of a slowed economy. And that is truly unfortunate. I recognize how tough it is trying to stay one step ahead of your competitors but it's downright insulting to be led to believe that if I sign up at 3:00 in the afternoon I'll be a quasi-millionaire by 4:30 the same day - oh, okay, maybe by 6:00!

Tips & Shortcuts

Do you do any type of regular maintenance to your computer? You really need to have a regular schedule of maintenance for your computer. Your computer is probably the most important part of your marketing campaign. Without a computer in good working order, you are stopped dead in the water!

Do you clear out files and delete old information on a regular basis? Do you scan for viruses even though your computer does a short scan when the cpu starts up? What about those of you who never turn your computers off? Do you scan your hard drive for errors and then run a de-frag?

I usually do all of the above on a monthly schedule, if not more often, with the exception of the virus scan. That I do on a weekly basis or when I feel the need. By doing so, I can keep my computer running more efficiently.

In the next few issues, I will tell you how to clear out files, scan your hard drive, and de-frag your hard drive by using the applications for that job in Windows!
