Welcome to Mara's Ads! This is a weekly ezine that will be sent out on Saturdays.

If you would like to contribute an article, please feel free to submit it to me along with an advertisement that you would like run. If I run your article, I will run the ad for 4 issues. If you subscribe, you get a free advertise- ment. Actually, all the advertisements are FREE. I will publish weekly (for now). The ads are first come, first to be published.

Don't Lie About the Pie!

(If You Want Money, it AIN'T FREE)

Dear Webmaster:

Your ad lists half a dozen things I'll get free, so I click on your link. At your website, I read line after line of all the wonderful things I'm going to get free.

The last few lines describe what all this wonderful information would be worth if I were PAYING for it.

But I'm going to get it ALL FREE.

Great. Where do I sign up?

Click on the "order" button. (Don't these usually just say "download"?)

Why do you want my credit card number if it's free?

Click the "back" button. Snarl at the computer. (The "Back" button NEVER works the first time) Click the "back" button again. OOPS.

NO. I Do NOT want to read my mail right now. (Why don't computers have an "Oops" button you can hit in that split second after you've realized you just did something Dumb?) Snarl some more. Hourglass. LOTS of mail today. OK. Now, "BACK".

Hourglass.

Oh, yeah, there it is, buried in the second paragraph from the end. "You'll get all these wonderful gifts just for buying the BIG MONEY PROGRAM for only $149.95."

I don't HAVE $149.95. Not that I can spend online without getting into a Serious (loud) Discussion with the person I told we couldn't afford a new fishing pole this week.

Guess I don't get ANYTHING free.

And guess what?

When I DO have $149.95 to spend, I'm not going to buy your BIG MONEY PROGRAM.

Because your ad and your website lied to me.

Maybe you should talk to the nice lady at the grocery store . . .

When I go to the grocery store, I buy a dozen eggs for 89�. I don't "get 11 eggs free when I buy one for only 89�." The pie sample I got last week from the nice blue-haired lady in the green dress was "free". I didn't have to buy anything to get it. But she gave me a coupon. And the pie was good.

So I bought two.

Sometimes the blue-haired lady is giving samples of something like deep fried okra. I don't like okra. I don't even want a sample. Sometimes she has samples of something like "New tasty taters". I look at them. I sniff. I taste. If I like, I buy. If I don't like, I don't buy.

Now, following the blue-haired lady's example, suppose you offer a sample in your ad. If it's something I KNOW I want (like pie) or MIGHT want (like Tasty Taters), I'll click to your website to collect my sample and learn more (this is usually where the blue haired lady tells me why THIS brand is BETTER than all the others and offers me a Special Coupon).

If it's fried okra, I'll step away from the table, thank you anyway, and let you talk to somebody that likes fried okra well enough to spend good money on it.

But don't offer me a free sample of pie and not give it to me. Not only will I not buy your pie, but I'll tell my five daughters not to buy your pie. Between us, we will tell 50 friends not to buy your pie . .

What? You say I "misunderstood"? You "clearly" stated that the 6 "free" things you listed in your ad and the 57 "free" things you listed on your website were only "free" with a purchase. Your ad was "within the limits of the law".

Good point. But I'm not the law. I'm the customer. So maybe it wasn't illegal, just sneaky. I don't like sneaky any more than I like okra.

And if you expect me to pay for it, it ain't free. So there.

Misspelled words or misused words turn most people off before they even read your ad or get a good look at your website! When writing your ad or putting information up on your website, be sure to check your spelling! Almost every word processing program has spellchecker. Use it! If you don't have access to spellchecker, get a dictionary.

If you do use spellchecker, be careful because it may approve a word that is misused but not misspelled. For example - add for ad, etc. Again, use the dictionary. It usually will give an example of how the word should be used!
