Chess Organisations

Surrey County Chess Association organises the divisions, tournaments and county teams for Surrey.
Southern Counties Chess Union  The link between member federations and the BCF. Has results of county matches.
British Chess Federation Has national and international news, a calendar of British events and links to clubs and organisations. Produces the annual rating list.
Federation International Des Echecs or World Chess Federation as it is also known. You can check your rating online, find out your national ranking and global ranking. Updated every quarter.

News and articles

TWIC Run by Chess and Bridge on Euston Road, the site has all the latest chess news and games for download.
British Chess Magazine Has a calendar and also runs Britbase, a collection of games from British events and links to other countries national databases.
Chess cafe An excellent site with news, reviews and articles.
Chesswatch Interesting site that explores chess on the internet. A lot of news and input from readers. Can be off the beaten track.
Tim Krabbe's Chess Curiosities A diverse collection of articles with something to interest any chess player.
GM Square Run by GM Alex Baburin. Features, book reviews and interviews, also contains GM Dvoretsky's proposal for reducing the number of quick GM draws.
GM's Short and Norwood with IM Malcolm Pein write about chess for The Daily Telegraph. You have to register.
GM Lubomir Kavalek presents his weekly column for The Washington Post. In my opinion one of the best chess journalists. Just three personal details to register.

Playchess.com Fritz-compatible internet chess run by Chessbase.  Free trial.
Internet Chess Club One of the best chess servers. They offer a free 7 day trial.
Exeter Chess Club An array of articles giving advice for players from beginner to expert levels.
Russian Chess (in English). Annotated games by Russian GM's, play chess online, and play through the latest games in a Java viewer.
New in Chess has an online searchable database of nearly a million games. You can search through the move tree and get the percentage score on any line.
Links to plenty of PGN files that you can dowload. Has games from sites that are no longer online.
A chess enthusiast has created an extensive site, especially suited for those new to the game.

Computer chess

A history of computer chess with some interesting historical pictures. Chessbase also produce the Fritz and Shredder playing programs. You can download a light version of their popular database.
Nalimov Endgame Tablebase server Type in the FEN and the site will tell you whether its a win, draw or loss. Does all 3, 4 and 5 piece endgames. Some 6 piece games as well.
Chess playing programs and utilities that can be downloaded for free.
Anti-Computer chess Quite a few games that you can play through where the GM or other player has beaten the machine.

Miscellaneous

Dutch artist Gert Jan's Kijk has 300 drawings about chess to look at. Also in English.
An online 16ft comic about the authors obsession with chess. Interesting and different.
