Italian Organized Crime

When Organized Crime started in New York, the Irish had control.  To belong to any of the gangs, you had to be Irish. The area they formed in was called five point.  It received its name from a corner connecting five streets:
  • Cross Street
  • Anthony Street
  • Little Water Street
  • Orange Street
  • Mulberry Street.
Everyone wanted to be part of an organized crime group.  Men were changing their names to appear Irish.  One Italian man, Paolo Antonelli Vaccarelli changed his name to Paul Kelly.  Once he became leader of the gang, he changed the requirement from Irish to Italian.
