BELGRADE, Yugoslavia, Nov. 16 (UPI) The head of the U.N. civilian mission in Kosovo says additional police forces and other resources are needed to prevent ethnic violence in the province.
Bernard Kouchner said in a radio interview that he had requested 6, 000 police troops but that only 1,700 had been approved.
Kouchner said that one police patrol was needed just to enable an elderly Serb woman to buy bread in the supermarket and that the children of minority communities in Kosovo were in danger as soon as they crossed their doorstep.
Meanwhile, troops from the NATO-led peacekeeping force, KFOR, again on Tuesday prevented hundreds of Serbian workers from reporting to their jobs at factories in the Albanian zone of Mitrovica.
KFOR set up a barbwire barrier on the bridge that separates the two parts of the divided town.
The protesting workers dispersed after two hours and told media that they would continue to gather on the bridge each day until they were permitted to travel to their work places.
A similar incident took place Monday.
