BELGRADE, Yugoslavia, Nov. 10 (UPI) The Serbian Orthodox church in the Kosovo village of Donji Zakut has been gutted by an apparent arson fire.
The Belgrade newspaper Blic said Wednesday that the overnight fire was the latest in a series of arson attacks on orthodox churches and monasteries over the past five months in Kosovo.
Maj. Ole Irgens, a KFOR spokesman, said the shell of the church was found by a KFOR patrol early Tuesday in the village outside the town of Podujevo. The patrol had checked the building a few hours earlier.
Irgens said the arson had been well planned and was carried out by criminals.
The church had been encircled with barbed wire under a permanent guard, but, Irgens said, increasing tasks had over-stretched KFOR's resources in the area and the guards had been replaced by regular patrols.
