Greek leftwing groups yesterday launched a series of anti-American demonstrations with a mock trial of Nato leaders ahead of an official visit by President Bill Clinton. More than 20 protests are planned to coincide with Mr Clinton's arrival in Athens next weekend.
Public opinion in Greece was strongly opposed to Nato's bombardment of Yugoslavia and an opinion poll published yesterday indicated that 61 per cent of Greeks believe Mr Clinton's visit should be postponed.
Despite an appeal for restraint by Costas Simitis, the Socialist prime minister, the still-active communist party and several leftwing splinter groups said they would organise demonstrations in Athens and other Greek cities.
Security in the capital was stepped up yesterday after shots were fired on Sunday night at a US cultural centre and a bomb exploded outside the offices of a local distributor for Levi Strauss, the US clothes manufacturer. No injuries were reported.
