Sir,
In the debate over the Melita Norwood spy scandal, Mr James Macdonald (letters, October 27; see also letters, October 23) asks if anyone seriously believes that the West was contemplating a nuclear strike on the USSR.

Well yes, actually - I do. I am convinced that on more than one occasion the Americans would have launched such an attack if they thought they could do so without fear of retaliation.

Does anyone seriously believe that the Americans would have used atomic weapons against Hiroshima and Nagasaki if the Japanese had the means to fight back in kind? I think not.
