BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) President Slobodan Milosevic met Thursday with former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who has criticized NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia.
Clark, a rare Western visitor to Milosevic, has been widely praised by Serbia's state-run media for his reported defense of the Serbian cause during the 78-day NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia.
Following the meeting in Belgrade, a statement from Milosevic's office said that after using ''the most destructive weapons'' against Yugoslavia, the United States ''cannot talk about democracy and freedom.''
Milosevic praised Clark for ''brave, objective and moral'' stands during and after ''the aggression'' against Yugoslavia.
NATO began bombing Yugoslavia on March 24 in an effort to diminish the ability of Milosevic's forces to carry out a campaign of atrocities against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo province.
The International Action Center, headed by Clark, has organized protests and meetings in the U.S. against the NATO airstrikes.
