Immediate action is needed to get NATO to provide information on where and how it used depleted uranium weapons in Yugoslavia, the UN Environment Program Balkan Task Force said in a report on the environmental effects of the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia.
In a report presented to a press conference Monday in Belgrade, BTF head, former Finnish minister of environment, Pekka Haavisto admitted that the BTF had been unable over five months to obtain information from the US and NATO on the use of depleted uranium.
The BTF has not received any official document confirming or denying the use of weapons with depleted uranium, and it is still unclear whether only bombs of this kind were used or cruise missiles too.
The report only takes note that the US defense department had admitted that such bombs had been used.
Information on this is necessary in order to determine the damages and health hazards caused by the use of depleted uranium in order to take the necessary measures to protect the population, the BTF said.
The report also recommends that the World Health Organization carry out in-depth research on the health hazards caused by long-term exposure to depled uranium.
The BTF, which comprises experts from 19 countries, concluded that international aid must be provided to Yugoslavia in alleviating the damages caused by the bombing of industrial facilities and in protecting environment.
In-depth investigation must be pursued in order to determine the full scope of the environmental damage caused by the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia, the BTF concluded.
