SAN REMO - FR Yugoslavia at this moment is providing refuge for about a million refugees and displaced persons and is a country with the largest number of refugees in Europe, said Thursday the head of the U.N. mission to the U.N. in Geneva, Ambassador Branko Brankovic, speaking at an international seminar organized by the International Institute for Humanitarian Law from San Remo.
Pointing to the experience of Yugoslavia, Ambassador Brankovic said that the "unfortunate fate of refugees was the direct consequence of interference in the internal affairs of a state, in the first place by some developed European countries and the United States.
The experience of Yugoslavia shows that precisely those countries who did not shrink from realizing their political, military and economic interests in the region by provoking civil wars were not ready later to send humanitarian aid for refugees and in that way at least partly diminish the consequences of their disastrous policy. On the contrary, they continue to impose conditions for extending humanitarian aid to Yugoslavia, Ambassador Brankovic said.
The basic goal of the aggression on Yugoslavia was the overthowing of legitimately and democratically elected authorities and NATO is intent on forming a NATO base on the geostrategically important territory of FR Yugoslavia, Ambassador Brankovic said and added that by depriving Yugoslavia of humanitarian aid, its isolation and exclusion from the program for the reconstruction and economic integration of the region, shows that there is no wish or readiness, or interest of some influentual countries for the return of stability and peace in the Balkans.
