WARSAW, Oct 19, 1999 -- Support for Poland's ruling center-right government has nosedived, while the ex-communist opposition continues to rise in popularity, according to two polls published Monday.

The program of premier Jerzy Buzek is backed by just 13 percent of Poles and opposed by 76 percent, according to the Demoskop institute. Buzek's personal popularity rating is 22 percent for and 64 percent against, it said.

Meanwhile another poll, by the CBOS institute, gave his right-wing Catholic Solidarity Electoral Action (AWS) 17 percent of the vote, against 35 percent for the ex-communist Social Democrats, two percent up on September.

The results come amid widespread protests against reforms in the health, pensions and education sectors, while rising unemployment and crime rates are also causing concern.

Poland's next presidential elections are scheduled next year, and legislative ballots in two years' time.
