BUDAPEST, Oct 7, 1999 -- (Reuters) Hungarian broadcaster Antenna Hungaria said on Wednesday it had discontinued transmissions for U.S.-based Hungarian Broadcasting Corp (HBC), which was behind in its payments.
"Yesterday a few minutes before midnight the decision was made," said Andras Gyori, spokesman for Antenna Hungaria.
"The problems were not solved and the cooperation was cut off," he said.
Antenna Hungaria suspended digital satellite transmission for the two HBC channels in Hungary, MSat and Sziv TV, on September 24 but continued to relay the broadcasts on a subscription microwave system for the Budapest area, Gyori said.
He declined to say how much Antenna Hungaria is owed by HBC, but recent press reports put the figure at about 100 million forints ($416,700).
HBC's Sziv TV office in Budapest could not immediately be reached for comment.
The company last March announced in New York that it would restate certain 1998 financial results to reflect widening losses.
Gyori said HBC, a satellite-to-cable broadcaster for Central Europe, had been listed on the NASDAQ but the listing had not appeared recently, to his knowledge.
Antenna Hungaria has replaced the HBC broadcasts with two German-language channels, RTL2 and VOX.
Sziv TV and MSat programs may still be seen on cable networks receiving signals independently of Antenna Hungaria.
Antenna Hungaria shares closed at Ft 4,100, up Ft 100.
