SOFIA, Oct 3, 1999 -- (Agence France Presse) Bulgaria's Transport Minister Wilhelm Kraus warned Saturday that the Danube might flood this winter if debris blocking the river after the NATO bombing campaign in Yugoslavia was not cleared away.
"If the clearing of the Danube does not start now, there is a danger this winter of flooding further down the river," he said.
Between 14 and 19 million euros (15 and 20.3 million dollars) was needed to clear the river of the wreckage from bombed bridges, he said.
The European Union has said it is ready to contribute if Yugoslavia allows Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine to take part in the work.
The transport ministers from the three Danube countries agreed to join forces at a meeting in Kiev on September 22.
The Bulgarian, Romanian and Ukrainian ministers have invited their Serbian counterpart to the next meeting in Kiev, due to take place between October 5 and 15.
