KOSOVSKA MITROVICA -- Serbs from north Kosovska Mitrovica, escorted by heavy French KFor (international force) and gendarmerie troops, visited on Sunday their cemetery in the south, ethnic Albanian-populated part of the divided town.
The Serbian cemetery was heavily desecrated in the past few days, with ethnic Albanian extremists smashing more than 200 headstones and metres of fencing.
"You can see smashed headstones and uprooted crosses all over the places," says Vasilije Galjak, one of the visiting Serbs.
Preliminary estimates by the Serbian National Council in Kosovska Mitrovica in U.N.-protected Kosovo-Metohija put the damage wrought by ethnic Albanian extremists in the Serbian cemetery at around 500,000 German marks.
Ethnic Albanian terrorists tore down the fence in two places and set fire to the chapel, and are building their houses barely a metre from the perimetre of the cemetery.
For three months now, Serbs in Kosovska Mitrovica have not buried their dead at the cemetery, out of fear that ethnic Albanian terrorists might attack funeral processions.
