GENEVA, Switzerland, Sept. 15 (UPI) Carla Del Ponte, Switzerland's formidable federal prosecutor who has been aggressively probing allegations of Kremlin money laundering, assumed her new post as head of the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
Del Ponte was named last month by the U.N. Security Council as chief prosecutor of the war crimes court, based in the Hague, Netherlands. She replaces Louise Arbour, who left the tribunal after three years to take a seat on Canada's Supreme Court.
Del Ponte's caseload includes indictements against Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, accused of war crimes against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, as well as against former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic for alleged atrocities in Bosnia. Karadzic remains at large.
Del Ponte will also head the tribunal investigating the 1994 mass genocide in Rwanda, where an estimated half million people were slaughtered.
Del Ponte, 52, Switzerland's chief prosecutor since 1994, has earned a worldwide reputation as a tough crime fighter. She is most known for cracking down on money laundering and organized crime.
